NAMI Juneau Executive Director Position - Posted May 2020

NAMI Juneau is seeking a nonprofit professional to serve as its Executive Director. NAMI Juneau’s mission is to provide education, advocacy, support, and public awareness to help individuals affected by mental illness build better lives. The Executive Director provides leadership to and oversees the core programs and operations of NAMI Juneau and the Juneau Suicide Prevention Coalition (JSPC), including administrative, personnel, and financial management. The Executive Director reports directly to the NAMI Juneau Board of Directors and is under the general supervision of the Board President.

 

Executive Director Responsibilities:

Mission and Programs:

  • Collaborates with the NAMI Board of Directors in developing, implementing, and monitoring NAMI’s strategic plan.

  • Serves on the JSPC Steering Committee and contributes to the strategic direction of the coalition.

  • Responsible for planning, overseeing, and evaluating NAMI and JSPC’s programs and services.

  • Broadens support for NAMI and serves as the organization’s spokesperson to constituents, the media, and the general public.

  • Develops and maintains relationships and strategic collaborations with agencies and coalitions whose missions pertain, directly or indirectly, to mental illness and suicide prevention.

 

Board Governance:

  • Partners with the Board of Directors and its committees to maximize their efforts and seek their involvement in policy decisions and increase the visibility of the organization.

  • Communicates effectively and provides, in a timely and transparent manner, all information necessary for the Board of Directors to function properly and to make informed decisions.

  • Works closely with the Board of Directors on fundraising strategies and develops the resources necessary to support NAMI’s mission.

 

Financial Management:

  • Develops the annual operating budgets in coordination with the NAMI Board of Directors and the JPSC Steering Committee.

  • Manages finances, maintains records, and provides timely financial reports which accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization.  

  • Complies with all grant requirements and maintains a strong working relationship and transparency with funders.

  • Ensures that sound nonprofit organization bookkeeping and accounting procedures are followed and that required tax and other filings are submitted.

 

Personnel Management and Administration:

  • Responsible for hiring, supervising, and evaluating the job performance of NAMI and JSPC staff members.

  • Responsible for retaining staff and volunteers by providing training and opportunities for professional development.

  • Ensures the proper maintenance of all official records, policies, and documents, and adherence to NAMI’s Standards of Excellence.

  • Ensures commitment to and compliance with all contracts, applicable laws, and regulations across the organization.

 

Required Skills, Training, and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required with preference given to a master’s degree in social work, public administration, nonprofit management, or related fields.

  • Experience working in the behavioral health field and/or a deep commitment to working with and on behalf of those who live with mental illness and their loved ones.

  • A collaborative and creative leader who can adapt to a changing environment.

  • Demonstrated transparent and high integrity leadership.

  • Strong aptitude for problem-solving and relationship development.

  • Excellent organizational, written, and public speaking skills.

  • Demonstrated experience in grant writing, nonprofit financial management, and knowledge of fundraising strategies.

  • Managerial and supervisory experience, preferably in a nonprofit environment.

 

Position Details:

  • This is a full-time exempt position. Salary range is $76,000 – $80,000 DOE plus 3% retirement match, paid holiday and personal days, and flexible scheduling.

  • Paid travel for training opportunities, including NAMI National’s annual conference.
